Why do I need electrical testing?

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place a “duty of care” on employers and landlords to maintain electrical systems to prevent danger where it may otherwise exist. The only way of ensuring your duties are performed and adequate records are kept is by carrying out an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) in accordance with BS 7671 (the IEE Wiring Regulations).

By following this practice you can be sure your obligations under the Health and Safety at Work Act have been met as far as electrical safety is concerned. More importantly, your staff, visitors, patients, buildings and possessions are safe, and the small print of your insurance is satisfied.

What is involved?

Condition Reports require a series of visual inspections and electronic instrument tests to establish the safety of your electrical installation. It is vital that this work is carried out by qualified and experienced NICEIC Approved Contractor test engineers.

Davey & Gilbert have engineers who are fully qualified and trained to City & Guilds 2391 in electrical inspection work specifically. There may be minimal impact, such as short periods of downtime, but with careful planning and strong liaison between us this can be done at a time that best suits your home or business.

When complete you will receive an NICEIC Electrical Installation Condition Report detailing all of the circuit test results and a list of deviations from the BS 7671 wiring regulations. If you need the technical phrases unravelled, we have somebody available to talk it through with you and advise on what, if any, action is required. We can of course provide a free fixed price quotation for any of these upgrades.

What could happen if I don’t get it done?

Reasons such as cost, inconvenience or lack of knowledge will not be accepted as a defence in the event of an accident or fire.

Aside from the threat of prosecution in the event of injury or death, many insurance companies will not pay out if documented evidence of maintenance and inspections is not available.
